Sample text from Autumn in Piemonte ~ Saluzzo.
The small city of Saluzzo, a place that seems to capture much of what is special about Piemonte lies about an hour and a half south of Torino,sited just where the foothills of the sub- Alps meet the upper valley of the Po River. From a spring high up on its slopes, the river Po begins its long journey to the sea.
The plains and valleys around Saluzzo are fertile and some have their own micro-climate. You can drive for kilometres around the town through orchards and fields of maize and the natural abundance of the area is evident everywhere. The de Chiesa family of Saluzzo have been friends of my family for a long time and Alberto de Chiesa, a son of the patriarch, and his wife Monica asked us to stay. Alberto’s father lives in a large, traditional, yellow-painted house on top of the hill looking over Saluzzo.
The mountain valleys are the source of the most unusual produce. This is an area where some of the best cheeses in Italy, and therefore some of the best anywhere, originate....
